Terrestrial Energy Adds KSB to Approved Suppliers List for Primary Salt Pump

Frankenthal, Germany and Oakville, Ontario, Canada – March 17, 2021 – Terrestrial Energy has awarded KSB Pumps a supply contract to develop and manufacture primary pumps for use in the Integral Molten Salt Reactor (IMSR), a Generation IV advanced nuclear power plant. The new agreement is a result of a collaborative procurement process by Terrestrial Energy and KSB, and follows a long-term cooperation Memorandum of Understanding signed by the two companies in March 2020.

The IMSR primary molten salt pump circulates the fuel salt from the reactor graphite core to the primary heat exchangers, and is a key component of Terrestrial Energy’s IMSR power plant. KSB is a global leader in developing and supplying nuclear power plant pumps qualified to nuclear industry codes and standards.  The IMSR primary molten salt pump will be designed to meet the nuclear safety, performance and reliability requirements for IMSR operation.

“KSB has market-leading technical expertise in nuclear pumps. We have many years of experience in developing pumps for use in demanding operating conditions such as the high temperatures of a molten salt liquid,” said Andreas Hefter, Vice President Nuclear Energy at KSB. “We look forward to partnering with Terestrial Energy as it leads the Generation IV sector to market with the deployment of the first IMSR power plant.”

“This contract award to KSB Pumps is an important milestone and follows an extensive procurement process led by our nuclear supply chain team,” said Simon Irish, CEO of Terrestrial Energy. “KSB is an important supplier partnership. It has been the world-leading company in nuclear pump technology for more than 50 years. This IMSR supply chain progress underlines our leadership position in the Small Modular Reactor market and maintains schedule for first IMSR power plant operation in Canada as early as 2028.”

About Terrestrial Energy

Terrestrial Energy is a developer of Generation IV advanced nuclear power plants that use its proprietary Integral Molten Salt Reactor (IMSR) technology. IMSR technology represents true innovation in cost reduction, versatility and functionality of nuclear power plants. IMSR power plants will provide zero-carbon, reliable, dispatchable, cost-competitive electric power and high grade industrial heat for use in many industrial applications, such as chemical synthesis and desalination, and in so doing extend the application of nuclear energy far beyond electric power markets. They have the potential to make important contributions to industrial competitiveness, energy security, and economic growth. Their deployment will support rapid global decarbonization of the primary energy system by displacing fossil fuel combustion across a broad spectrum. Using an innovative design, and proven and demonstrated molten salt reactor technology, Terrestrial Energy is engaged with regulators and industrial partners to complete IMSR engineering and to commission first IMSR power plants in the late 2020s.
