Terrestrial Energy Names Former BP Chief Executive John Browne to Advisory Board

OAKVILLE, Ontario, Canada – February 15, 2023 – Terrestrial Energy, an advanced nuclear technology company, has named Lord John Browne of Madingley, former Group Chief Executive of international energy company BP plc, to its Advisory Board. As a member of its Advisory Board, Lord Browne will provide Terrestrial Energy with business counsel, and will join a group of leading figures in global industry and politics, including former G7 Cabinet and Prime Ministers, Fortune 500 executives, and leaders of regulatory authorities. Terrestrial Energy is developing a zero-emissions cogeneration plant for industry using its proprietary Integral Molten Salt Reactor (IMSR) fission technology.

Lord Browne is Chairman of BeyondNetZero, a climate growth equity venture established in partnership with General Atlantic. As Group Chief Executive of BP from 1995 to 2007, he led the company through a period of significant growth and transformation, including a merger with Amoco in 1998. His landmark speech at Stanford University in 1997 established BP as a global leader in the way it thought about and sought to address climate change.

“Decarbonizing industrial energy supply requires energy innovations that are scalable with high-impact potential and meet the economic requirements of industries operating in competitive global markets,” said Lord Browne. “Supporting these energy innovations today ensures their availability as commercial solutions within important timeframes. The IMSR is one such innovative solution, and I look forward to assisting Terrestrial Energy.”

“Terrestrial Energy’s IMSR is a zero-carbon cogeneration solution to industries operating large energy-intensive plants, a sector where the high-temperature operation and design of the IMSR have unique advantages,” said Simon Irish, Chief Executive of Terrestrial Energy. “Lord Browne is a distinguished leader in the global energy business and was an early visionary on climate change. We welcome Lord Browne to the Terrestrial Energy Advisory Board at a time when Fortune 500 companies are seeking effective solutions to scope 1 and 2 emissions.”

Lord Browne is independent co-Chairman of the Prime Minister’s Council on Science and Technology (United Kingdom), Chairman of the Queen Elizabeth Prize for Engineering, Chairman of the Francis Crick Institute, Chairman of the Courtauld Institute of Art, and a past President of the Royal Academy of Engineering. Lord Browne holds degrees in natural sciences from the University of Cambridge, and a master’s degree in business from Stanford University. He is a Fellow of the Royal Society, a Fellow of the American Academy of Arts & Sciences, and the author of five books.

About Terrestrial Energy

Terrestrial Energy is developing for near-term commercial operation a zero-emissions cogeneration plant for global industry using its proprietary Integral Molten Salt Reactor (IMSR) fission technology in an innovative, small and modular plant design. The IMSR is a non-Light Water Reactor of the Generation IV class that operates at the high temperature required for broad industrial relevance with transformative economic potential. The IMSR plant is capable of grid-based electric power generation and industrial cogeneration in many energy-intensive industries, including petrochemical and chemical synthesis for hydrogen and ammonia production. The IMSR plant offers a near 50 percent improvement in efficiency of electric power generation compared to Light Water Reactor nuclear plants. Its industrial cogeneration capability delivers to today’s markets industrial competitiveness, security of energy, and zero-emissions industrial production. The IMSR plant’s use of existing industrial materials, components, and fuels supports its near-term deployment, setting the stage for a rapid global decarbonization of the primary energy system.
