“New nuclear” has enjoyed a good start to 2022.
Breakthrough legislation on the financing of new nuclear projects has been followed by warm rhetoric from the Business Secretary, Kwasi Kwarteng, who talked about the need for the UK to “double down on new nuclear power” as “the more clean, affordable power we generate in the UK, the less dependent we’ll be on imports.”
Sydney, Australia and Oakville, Ontario, Canada, February 2, 2022 – ANSTO, Australia’s knowledge centre for nuclear science and technology, and Terrestrial Energy have agreed to explore ANSTO Synroc® (synthetic rock) proprietary waste treatment technology for used fuel management.
Under the agreement, ANSTO will provide technical consulting services to Terrestrial Energy for the conditioning of used reactor fuel from the operation of Integral Molten Salt Reactor (IMSR®) heat and power plants in Canada, United Kingdom, United States, and other global markets.
Terrestrial Energy Appoints Managing Director to Spearhead Commercialization of New Nuclear Technology in the UK
Oxford, United Kingdom, January 18, 2022 – Terrestrial Energy has appointed a senior nuclear industry executive as Managing Director of UK operations as the company advances its new nuclear technology.
Michael Drury joins the company from the UK National Nuclear Laboratory (NNL), where he led the business development function for New Build and Advanced Nuclear Technologies, including Small Modular Reactors and Advanced Modular Reactors.
The appointment comes as Terrestrial Energy moves forward with the development and commercialisation of its Integral Molten Salt Reactor (IMSR®) Generation IV nuclear technology in the UK.
Mr Drury has extensive experience of strategy and execution at the intersection of industry and government in the nuclear industry at both NNL and previously at Nuvia.
Simon Irish, CEO of Terrestrial Energy said: “Terrestrial Energy’s North American developments are moving its Generation IV nuclear power plant towards near term deployment, and we recognize that IMSR® technology is an ideal nuclear technology innovation for the UK, especially at a time of escalating energy and power prices.
Oakville, Ontario, Canada – November 30, 2021 – Terrestrial Energy and Siemens Energy Canada have signed a contract for the manufacturing and supply of steam turbines and other balance-of-plant equipment, such as transformers, switchgear, and motor drive systems, for the Integral Molten Salt Reactor (IMSR®), a Generation IV nuclear power plant.
The IMSR® generates steam for power generation at standard utility class temperature and pressure, and from systems that are isolated from its nuclear reactor.
CHARLOTTE, NC – November 24, 2021 – Terrestrial Energy USA was awarded a $3 million grant from the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) to support licensing and commercialisation of its Integral Molten Salt Reactor (IMSR®), a Generation IV nuclear power plant.
Oakville, Ontario – October 26, 2021 – Terrestrial Energy has awarded BWXT Canada Ltd. engineering design contracts for steam generators and heat exchangers for use in the Integral Molten Salt Reactor (IMSR®), a Generation IV nuclear power plant.
Terrestrial Energy and Cameco to Examine Partnerships for Deploying IMSR Generation IV Nuclear Power Plant
Oakville, Ont. – October 13, 2021 – Terrestrial Energy and Cameco Corporation (TSX: CCO; NYSE: CCJ), both leading Canadian companies in their fields, have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) to examine potential partnership opportunities to deploy Terrestrial Energy’s Integrated Molten Salt Reactor (IMSR®) Generation IV nuclear power plants in North America and worldwide, and to evaluate possible opportunities for the supply of uranium supply, fuel and other services.
Terrestrial Energy and Orano Sign Comprehensive Agreement for Nuclear Fuel Supply for IMSR Power Plant
Bethesda, Maryland, and Oakville, Ontario – September 29, 2021 – Terrestrial Energy has entered into an agreement with Orano, a global leader in the nuclear fuel cycle, as part of its fuel supply program for operation of the Integral Molten Salt Reactor (IMSR®), a Generation IV “next-generation” nuclear power plant.
The agreement’s broad scope of services includes uranium enrichment, chemical conversion to IMSR® fuel form, its production, transportation, packaging, and logistics.

A lot of people are speculating about the potential role of small modular reactors, known in the nuclear industry by the acronym “SMRs.” These new reactor designs promise to deliver a clean and reliable alternative to fossil fuels – but the discussion typically focuses on the “S” and the “M,” as if those features represent the true innovation.
Terrestrial Energy, Westinghouse and UK National Nuclear Laboratory Sign Agreement for IMSR Nuclear Fuel Supply
Preston, United Kingdom and Oakville, Ontario – August 17, 2021 – Westinghouse, the UK National Nuclear Laboratory (NNL), and Terrestrial Energy have signed an agreement for nuclear fuel development and supply.
