Job Opening: R&D Physics Scientist

Terrestrial Energy is a developer of Generation IV advanced nuclear power plants that use its proprietary Integral Molten Salt Reactor (IMSR®) technology. IMSR® technology represents true innovation in cost reduction, versatility and functionality of nuclear power plants. IMSR® power plants will provide zero-carbon, reliable, dispatchable, cost-competitive electric power and high-grade industrial heat for use in many industrial applications, such as chemical synthesis and desalination, and in so doing extend the application of nuclear energy far beyond electric power markets. We have the potential to make important contributions to industrial competitiveness, energy security, and economic growth. Our deployment will support rapid global decarbonization of the primary energy system by displacing fossil fuel combustion across a broad spectrum. Using an innovative design, and proven and demonstrated molten salt reactor technology, we are engaged with regulators and industrial partners to complete IMSR® engineering and to commission first IMSR® power plants in the late 2020s. R&D Physics Scientist

Reports To

R&D Director

Job Duties

The R&D Physics Scientist, under the direction of the R&D Program Manager, is primarily responsible for:

  • Prepare the documents tailored to identifying and justifying necessary physics test in support of Physics design, Safety analysis, Licensing activities and other integrated system designs;
  • Develop scope of work for each identified testing activity;
  • Experimental design, instrument reading and test data analysis in coordination with R&D Data Scientist(s) and participation in resolution of technical issues;
  • Review of the internal end external documents as related to test identification, test design development and testing activities;
  • Report physics R&D activities results, risks, assumptions and constraints to the R&D Program Manager proposing path forward;
  • Collaborate with R&D Project Coordinator to maintain and update schedule including status of all projects;
  • Collaborate with the TEI Physics team and other interfacing teams in support of design development; and
  • Collaborate with suppliers in activities focused on the test design development.

  • PhD or MS and more than 5 years experience in an experimental nuclear reactor physics, or comparable;
  • experience in identifying and designing experimental nuclear physics tests in support of the Reactor Physics Design;
  • working knowledge of nuclear physics characterization techniques;
  • experience in reviewing of test procedures and plans as well as calibration, software validation, and test reports;
  • experience in analysis of the experimental nuclear physics instrument reading data and test results;
  • demonstrated success in project delivery and the execution of research and development activities;
  • working knowledge of Serpent, EQL0D, MCNP, and SCALE;
  • skills and ability to learn quickly and applying new concepts, methods, and technology;
  • demonstrated ability to multitask & manage numerous short- and long-term projects concurrently;
  • exceptional interpersonal and communication (both written and verbal) skills; and
  • Skilled at developing and maintaining strong relationships across all levels of the organization and with external customers and vendors.


  • Working knowledge FORTRAN, C, and Python or C++ or C#;
  • Skills and ability to deliver presentations; and
  • Demonstrated experience in reactor physics modeling and simulations.
