Job Opening: R&D Materials Scientist/Engineer

Terrestrial Energy is a developer of Generation IV advanced nuclear power plants that use its proprietary Integral Molten Salt Reactor (IMSR®) technology. IMSR® technology represents true innovation in cost reduction, versatility and functionality of nuclear power plants. IMSR® power plants will provide zero-carbon, reliable, dispatchable, cost-competitive electric power and high-grade industrial heat for use in many industrial applications, such as chemical synthesis and desalination, and in so doing extend the application of nuclear energy far beyond electric power markets. We have the potential to make important contributions to industrial competitiveness, energy security, and economic growth. Our deployment will support rapid global decarbonization of the primary energy system by displacing fossil fuel combustion across a broad spectrum. Using an innovative design, and proven and demonstrated molten salt reactor technology, we are engaged with regulators and industrial partners to complete IMSR® engineering and to commission first IMSR® power plants in the late 2020s. R&D Materials Scientist/Engineer

Reports To

R&D Director

Job Duties

The R&D Materials Scientist/Engineer, under the direction of the R&D Director, is primarily responsible for materials selection related activities, including development and execution of test programs in support of TEI Engineering as part of TEI’s overall R&D Program. Within this role, responsibilities include:

  • Provision of subject matter expertise on materials science;
  • Authorship of documents accompanying the material selection and qualification process in coordination with Engineering, Safety, Quality, Licensing stakeholders and external parties;
  • Review of the internal and external documents as related to test identification, test design development and testing activities;
  • Execution of the materials section and qualification activities at the direction of the R&D Director;
  • Presentation of test results, assumptions, risks, and constraints to the R&D Director and proposing paths forward;
  • Collaboration with the R&D Project Coordinator to maintain and update schedule including status of all projects;
  • Collaboration with the TEI Engineering to support design development;
  • Collaboration with suppliers in activities focused on material selection and qualification; and
  • Experimental design, instrument reading and test data analysis in coordination with R&D Data Scientist(s) and participation in resolution of technical issues.

  • Master’s degree (or higher) in Materials Science or Materials Engineering, or related field;
  • Minimum 1-2 years of work experience in nuclear power industry or academia conducting research activities relating to materials science;
  • Demonstrated success in project delivery and the execution of research and development activities;
  • Experience in the following disciplines: physical properties of materials, materials selection, mechanical/thermal hydraulic design;
  • Working knowledge of physical or computational experimental design;
  • Working knowledge of materials characterization techniques across all material classes;
  • Strong problem identification and problem resolution skills;
  • Demonstrated ability to multitask & manage numerous short- and long-term projects concurrently;
  • Exceptional interpersonal and communication (both written and verbal) skills; and
  • Skilled at developing and maintaining strong relationships across all levels of the organization and with external customers and vendors


  • Knowledge of the nuclear design codes & standards (ASME, CSA)
  • Experience with testing of irradiated materials
  • Practical knowledge of process system design (i.e., pipes, pumps, and valves)
