Terrestrial Energy is a developer of Generation IV advanced nuclear power plants that use its proprietary Integral Molten Salt Reactor (IMSR®) technology. IMSR® technology represents true innovation in cost reduction, versatility and functionality of nuclear power plants. IMSR® power plants will provide zero-carbon, reliable, dispatchable, cost-competitive electric power and high-grade industrial heat for use in many industrial applications, such as chemical synthesis and desalination, and in so doing extend the application of nuclear energy far beyond electric power markets. Our deployment will support rapid global decarbonization of the primary energy system by displacing fossil fuel combustion across a broad spectrum. Principal Probabilistic Safety/Risk Assessment Engineer

Job Duties

The Principal Probabilistic Safety/Risk Assessment Engineer, under the direction of Safety Manager, is primarily responsible for development of Level-1 and integration with Level-2 PSA/PRA to support the design, establish the safety profile for licensing and eventual implementation of IMSR® technology at the industrial scale level. Primary responsibilities include:

  • Develop and maintain event and fault trees, in areas targeting model development for: in-vessel radiological transport and containment transport
  • Develop mechanistic radiological release categories for PSA/PRA models in accordance with the safety goals established for Gen IV reactors
  • Develop appropriate system/component-based logic models and perform risk calculations using nuclear industry-standard risk assessment methods and analysis tools
  • Conduct independent analysis to develop plant-specific PSA/PRAs and to support the plant response deterministic analysis
  • Develop PSA/PRA tools and ensure that they are appropriately used for the IMSR® design and within regulatory requirements
  • Provide technical guidance to the organization on reliability and various PSA/PRA-related topics and formulate PSA/PRA Level-1 Guide for IMSR® design
  • Supporting hazard analysis and Structures, Systems and Components (SSC) classification
  • Establish and maintain documentation of model development and analysis results
  • Support planning, development, and implementation of IMSR® Safety Basis
  • Support development of regulatory deliverables, including safety analysis reports, and license applications
  • Support resolution of key strategic issues associated with the safety and licensing basis
  • Work with an interdisciplinary team of engineers to establish core and reactor SSC functional, reliability, performance, safety, and quality requirements as well as support the overall design
  • Review assessment documents and provide comments

Core Competencies

  • Knowledge of PSA/PRA principles and familiarity with the Canadian Regulatory PSA/PRA Standard
  • Knowledge of PSA/PRA fundamentals in data, human reliability, accident analysis, and source term assessments
  • PSA/PRA model development and quantification
  • Extensive experience in developing fault trees for system modeling and event trees for sequence modeling using PRA software for the nuclear industry (e.g., CAFTA/RiskSpectrum/SAPHIRE or similar)
  • Experience in integrating Level-1 and Level-2 PSA/PRA to establish the overall risk profile for a nuclear power plant
  • Have a thorough understanding of CDF, SRF, LRF, and LERF as risk metrics and if any, their limitations

  • Bachelors or M.S. degree in Mechanical, Nuclear, Chemical or Systems Design Engineering
  • Minimum work experience of 5 years in nuclear power generation field in the area of PSA/PRA
  • Working knowledge of any programming/scripting language such as C#, C++, Python, Fortran or Matlab
  • Fundamental knowledge of probability and statistics
  • Systems engineering skills
  • Registered as P.Eng. in Professional Engineers Ontario
  • Knowledge and understanding of CSA N286.7-16 standard requirements associated with analysis and software management
  • Skills and ability to learn new analysis tools
  • Strong analytical skillsets
  • Strong problem identification and problem resolution skills
  • Flexibility to adjust to shifting priorities and deadlines
  • Exceptional interpersonal and communication (both written and verbal) skills
  • Skilled at developing and maintaining strong relationships across all levels of the organization and with external customers and vendors


  • Knowledge of molten salt nuclear reactor working principles
  • Prior experience in performing deterministic assessments using safety analysis codes
  • Awareness in relation to regulatory requirements on nuclear design, and risk-informed guidance for Advanced Gen IV Reactors
  • Ph.D. degree is preferred
