Job Opening: Plant Layout and Facilities Lead

Terrestrial Energy is a developer of Generation IV advanced nuclear power plants that use its proprietary Integral Molten Salt Reactor (IMSR®) technology. IMSR® technology represents true innovation in cost reduction, versatility and functionality of nuclear power plants. IMSR® power plants will provide zero-carbon, reliable, dispatchable, cost-competitive electric power and high-grade industrial heat for use in many industrial applications, such as chemical synthesis and desalination, and in so doing extend the application of nuclear energy far beyond electric power markets. We have the potential to make important contributions to industrial competitiveness, energy security, and economic growth. Our deployment will support rapid global decarbonization of the primary energy system by displacing fossil fuel combustion across a broad spectrum. Using an innovative design, and proven and demonstrated molten salt reactor technology, we are engaged with regulators and industrial partners to complete IMSR® engineering and to commission first IMSR® power plants in the late 2020s. Plant Layout and Facilities Lead

Reports To

Systems Engineering Director



Job Duties

The Plant Layout and Facilities Lead, under the direction of the Systems Engineering Director, is primarily responsible for the plant and facilities layout design as a member of an integrated design team, assuring consistency, and requirements are incorporated into layout and facilities design. Other responsibilities include:

  • Collect and organize information (such as process/mechanical, instrumentation and control, electrical, civil) for the layout of systems and equipment for various buildings
  • Coordinate and facilitate regular layout meetings
  • Gather facts to use them to evaluate concepts and make decisions on what is best for the plant layout and facility planning
  • Support security (e.g. ingress/egress analysis, building access, site access), fire separation analysis and code matrix analysis
  • Ensure appropriate codes & standards are implemented into the plant and site layouts
  • Carry out layout optimization using systematic methods
  • Produce building layout 3D models using PTC Creo
  • Design piping layout for plant and auxiliary systems, HVAC ducts, and electrical cable trays in the 3D model; including interference detection and resolution
  • Write the related technical documents (such as layout methodology, progress reports, change impact analysis, assessment documents)
  • Release/issue the layout models to the various teams and coordinate layout activities by ensuring compliance with the layout rules
  • Progress monitoring and change management and prepare a regular status report on the model in the light of the latest input data and modifications requested
  • Regularly carry out layout engineering reviews (with all the engineering teams involved)
  • Contribute to the analysis, design, and development of IMSR® systems and integrate plant layout knowledge into designs

  • Post-secondary degree or diploma degree in mechanical, industrial, nuclear engineering or architecture
  • Minimum 4 to 8 years of work experience in industrial layout (e.g. in nuclear power, other power generation, petrochemical, mining, steel)
  • An Ontario Professional Engineering designation or eligibility to attain P.Eng.
  • Knowledge of National Building Code of Canada and Ontario Building Code
  • Knowledge of modularization
  • Knowledge of fundamentals of developing efficient layouts, flow patterns, and system interfacing to determine optimal locations of facilities (i.e. improvement algorithms)
  • Skilled in creating and iterating layouts by integrating written and/or verbal descriptions of basic civil/structural, mechanical/process, and electrical system requirements
  • Advanced understanding of 3D CAD software (such as PTC Creo)
  • Understanding of occupational health and safety (OHS) requirements for safety and access for equipment layout
  • Strong problem identification and problem resolution skills
  • Flexibility to adjust to shifting priorities and deadlines
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced, multi-disciplinary team environment
  • Exceptional interpersonal skills, with ability to communicate clearly and accurately, both written and verbally
  • Skilled at developing and maintaining strong relationships across all levels of the organization and with external customers and vendors


  • Knowledge of molten salt nuclear reactor working principles
  • Knowledge and/or experience in Generation IV (Gen IV) reactors
  • Knowledge of the general operation of a nuclear power plant and aspects relating to flooding, fire, radiological protection, and human factors
  • Experience with high temperature system/equipment layout design
  • Experience with design and layout of automated systems
  • Knowledge of physical security best practices
