Job Opening: Physics Analyst

Terrestrial Energy is a developer of Generation IV advanced nuclear power plants that use its proprietary Integral Molten Salt Reactor (IMSR®) technology. IMSR® technology represents true innovation in cost reduction, versatility and functionality of nuclear power plants. IMSR® power plants will provide zero-carbon, reliable, dispatchable, cost-competitive electric power and high-grade industrial heat for use in many industrial applications, such as chemical synthesis and desalination, and in so doing extend the application of nuclear energy far beyond electric power markets. We have the potential to make important contributions to industrial competitiveness, energy security, and economic growth. Our deployment will support rapid global decarbonization of the primary energy system by displacing fossil fuel combustion across a broad spectrum. Using an innovative design, and proven and demonstrated molten salt reactor technology, we are engaged with regulators and industrial partners to complete IMSR® engineering and to commission first IMSR® power plants in the late 2020s. Physics Analyst

Job Duties

The Physics Analyst, under the direction of the Physics Manager, is primarily responsible for performing reactor physics analyses and design assessments using reactor physics computer codes and analytical techniques. Other responsibilities include:

  • Perform sensitivity analyses of postulated design concepts and options for reactivity control and power regulation
  • Programming and scripting of complex algorithms within both a WINDOWS and LINUX environment
  • Contribute to the design and assessment of shutdown mechanisms
  • Perform assessments on operations and fuel utilization
  • Perform assessments on shutdown and restart transient affects
  • Conduct radiation dose calculations in and around the reactor unit and reactor building, in support of radiological design assessment for radiation protection
  • Perform uncertainty analysis for physics neutron cross-sections
  • Analyze graphite performance and graphite structure in a high radiation environment of a molten salt reactor
  • Communicate and work with various technical disciplines to understand system design(s) and interfacing requirements
  • Prepare written reports of assessments

Requirements

  • PhD or Master’s degree in Nuclear Engineering or Engineering Physics
  • 2 to 5 years of work experience in physics, with focus in reactor physics
  • An Ontario Professional Engineering designation or eligibility to attain P.Eng.
  • Experience in state-of-the-art monte carlo calculation computer codes (such as MCNP, SERPENT and SCALE)
  • Proficient in MATLAB
  • Proficient in Python
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Office
  • Strong problem identification and problem resolution skills
  • Flexibility to adjust to shifting priorities and deadlines
  • Exceptional interpersonal and communication (both written and verbal) skills
  • Skilled at developing and maintaining strong relationships across all levels of the organization and with external customers and vendors

Assets

  • Experience in deterministic codes
  • Industry experience in Nuclear Power

  • Knowledgeable in molten salt fueled nuclear reactors and graphite moderator
