Job Opening: Human Factors Engineer / Designer

Terrestrial Energy is a developer of Generation IV advanced nuclear power plants that use its proprietary Integral Molten Salt Reactor (IMSR®) technology. IMSR® technology represents true innovation in cost reduction, versatility and functionality of nuclear power plants. IMSR® power plants will provide zero-carbon, reliable, dispatchable, cost-competitive electric power and high-grade industrial heat for use in many industrial applications, such as chemical synthesis and desalination, and in so doing extend the application of nuclear energy far beyond electric power markets. We have the potential to make important contributions to industrial competitiveness, energy security, and economic growth. Our deployment will support rapid global decarbonization of the primary energy system by displacing fossil fuel combustion across a broad spectrum. Using an innovative design, and proven and demonstrated molten salt reactor technology, we are engaged with regulators and industrial partners to complete IMSR® engineering and to commission first IMSR® power plants in the late 2020s. Human Factors Engineer/Designer

Job Duties

The Human Factors Engineer/Designer, under the direction of the Systems Engineering Director, is primarily responsible for conducting Human Factors Engineering (HFE) design and analyses. Other responsibilities include:

  • · Support HFE integration into design, in accordance to the Human Factors Engineering Program Plan (HFEPP), performing systematic analyses such as:
    • Operating Experience Reviews
    • Work Domain Analysis or Function Allocation and Analysis
    • Task Analysis
    • HSI Design
  • Update HFEPP(s) and produce HFE documentation ensuring accuracy, completeness and quality of technical information and project documentation in accordance with Management System
  • Support development and revisions of Concept of Operations
  • Support analyses for Minimum Staff Complement for operating IMSR® plant
  • Support the design of Control Facilities, including Main Control Room (MCR) and Secondary Control Area (SCA) design
  • Work with engineering disciplines to collect information to analyze and evaluate existing and proposed systems’ designs to identify HFE interfaces
  • Participate in the design of displays and human-computer interaction and develop design guides
  • Participate in inter-disciplinary design reviews
  • Provide HFE input and support to plant and site layouts
  • Support Constructability, Commissioning, Operability, Maintainability, Inspectability, and Maintainability (CCOMIT) design and analyses
  • Plan and perform systems integration and test activities, system verification, and system validation

  • Post-secondary degree in Systems Design Engineering, Industrial Engineering, or Computer Science specializing in Human Factors or Human Computer Interaction
  • Minimum two years of work experience in designing systems within safety-critical and/or complex environments
  • Knowledge of HFE regulations and standards, such as those applicable to nuclear industry including CSA N210.12, REGDOC-2.2.1, NUREG-0711, NUREG-0700
  • Design of experiments and statistical analyses
  • Experience in usability testing
  • An Ontario Professional Engineering designation or eligibility to attain P.Eng.
  • Demonstrated success in project delivery and the execution of HFE methods
  • Ability to manage assigned work effectively to meeting project goals and timelines


  • Graduate degree in Systems Design Engineering, Industrial Engineering, or related field
  • Canadian Certified Professional Ergonomist (CCPE) designation or certification with a professional Human Factors/Ergonomics organization (e.g. BCPE – US)
  • Knowledgeable in Probabilistic Safety Analysis (PSA) and Human Reliability Analysis (HRA)
  • Expert in MS Visio
  • Experience in the nuclear industry
  • Knowledgeable in information management and databases
  • Knowledgeable in Systematic Approach to Training (SAT)
