Job Opening: Fire Protection Designer/Engineer

Terrestrial Energy is a developer of Generation IV advanced nuclear power plants that use its proprietary Integral Molten Salt Reactor (IMSR®) technology. IMSR® technology represents true innovation in cost reduction, versatility and functionality of nuclear power plants. IMSR® power plants will provide zero-carbon, reliable, dispatchable, cost-competitive electric power and high-grade industrial heat for use in many industrial applications, such as chemical synthesis and desalination, and in so doing extend the application of nuclear energy far beyond electric power markets. We have the potential to make important contributions to industrial competitiveness, energy security, and economic growth. Our deployment will support rapid global decarbonization of the primary energy system by displacing fossil fuel combustion across a broad spectrum. Using an innovative design, and proven and demonstrated molten salt reactor technology, we are engaged with regulators and industrial partners to complete IMSR® engineering and to commission first IMSR® power plants in the late 2020s. Fire Protection Designer / Engineer

Reports To

Systems Engineering Director

Job Duties

The System Engineering Designer Fire Protection1, under the direction of Systems Engineering Director, is primarily responsible for supporting the development and integration of the IMSR® Fire Protection Systems. Other responsibilities include:

  • Support the evaluation of fire hazards and protection methods to develop a solution to a fire safety problem.
  • Prepare and/or assist in developing design and engineering documents related to fire protection systems, including:
  • Preliminary and basic engineering documents
  • Fire Hazard Assessment
  • Fire Safe Shutdown Assessment
  • Fire Code Compliance Review
  • Building System Analysis in compliance with the National Building Code of Canada and National Fire Code of Canada
  • Prepare top level design and specifications for fire protection systems, and features and supervision of detailed designed performed by vendors
  • Review work by SRE’s to ensure smooth integration with fire protection system design and conformance with the codes and standards related to the systems.
  • Develop acceptance requirements for deviations from codes and standards, as necessary.

  • Ability to apply principle of Fire Dynamics Fundamentals
  • Knowledge of fire protection related codes and standards including NBCC, NFC, CSA Standards, ULC Standards, and NFPA Standards
  • Egress and Occupant Movement.
  • Working knowledge of fire protection in relation to building construction and the ability to assess and design active fire protection systems.
  • Ability to conduct Fire Protection Analysis including but not limited to;
  • Basic understanding of Hazard analysis, risk analysis, and economic analysis techniques

Requirements

  • Bachelors or M.Eng degree in Mechanical, Nuclear, Systems Design Engineering, or Fire Safety
  • Minimum two years of work experience in nuclear power generation field or large industrial applications, and focus in fire safety
  • System engineering skills
  • Working knowledge and understanding of applicable regulatory and industry codes applicable to Fire Protection
  • An Ontario Professional Engineering designation or eligibility to attain P.Eng.
  • Skills and ability to adapt to a design environment
  • Strong problem identification and problem resolution skills
  • Flexibility to adjust to shifting priorities and deadlines
  • Exceptional interpersonal and communication (both written and verbal) skills
  • Skilled at developing and maintaining strong relationships across all levels of the organization and with external customers and vendors

Assets

  • Knowledge of molten salt nuclear reactor working principles
  • Industry experience in designing fire protection systems and components under extreme conditions is an asset
  • Awareness in relation to regulatory requirements on nuclear design, and risk informed guidance for Advanced Gen IV Reactors
  • Experience in the nuclear industry
  • Familiarity of fire modeling software and common practices within the fire safety industry
