Job Opening: Architect/Architectural Designer

Terrestrial Energy is a developer of Generation IV advanced nuclear power plants that use its proprietary Integral Molten Salt Reactor (IMSR®) technology. IMSR® technology represents true innovation in cost reduction, versatility and functionality of nuclear power plants. IMSR® power plants will provide zero-carbon, reliable, dispatchable, cost-competitive electric power and high-grade industrial heat for use in many industrial applications, such as chemical synthesis and desalination, and in so doing extend the application of nuclear energy far beyond electric power markets. We have the potential to make important contributions to industrial competitiveness, energy security, and economic growth. Our deployment will support rapid global decarbonization of the primary energy system by displacing fossil fuel combustion across a broad spectrum. Using an innovative design, and proven and demonstrated molten salt reactor technology, we are engaged with regulators and industrial partners to complete IMSR® engineering and to commission first IMSR® power plants in the late 2020s. To execute this plan, we are now looking to add talented people to the team, each of whom will:

Job Duties

The Architect/ Architectural Designer, under the direction of the Plant Layout Lead, is primarily responsible for setting IMSR®400 plant and site layout concepts as a member of an integrated team, assuring consistency, and ensuring that safety, operation, maintenance and construction requirements are incorporated into layout and facilities design. Other responsibilities include:

  • Produce conceptual and detailed design models that include, site plans, floor plans, roof plans, exterior elevations, interior sections, wall sections, details, schedules, etc.
  • Produce diagrams, schematics, and sketches of building components and systems intended for design assessments, reports, and presentation material
  • Produce 3D CAD models
  • Support security (e.g. ingress/egress analysis, building access, site access), fire separation analysis and code matrix analysis.
  • Collect and organize information (such as process/mechanical, instrumentation and control, electrical) for the layout engineering of systems and equipment for various buildings
  • Carry out layout optimization using systematic methods
  • Design piping layout (pipe routing and supports) for plant and auxiliary systems, HVAC ducts, and electrical cable trays in the 3D model; including interference detection and resolution
  • Design access platforms, stairways, catwalks and other building components
  • Write the related technical documents (such as layout methodology, progress reports, change impact analysis)
  • Issue the layout models to the various teams and coordinate their layout activities by ensuring compliance with the layout rules
  • Progress monitoring and change management and prepare a regular status report on the model in the light of the latest input data
  • Manage and monitors the modifications requested by the various engineering teams.
  • Regularly carries out layout engineering reviews (with all engineering teams involved).
  • Analyze, design, and develop IMSR® systems and integrate plant knowledge to improve plant operations
  • Ensure appropriate codes & standards are implemented into the plant and site layouts

Requirements

  • Post-secondary degree or diploma in architecture, building sciences, design technician, design technologist, industrial design
  • Minimum 4 years of work experience in industrial layout (e.g. in nuclear power, other power generation, petrochemical, mining, steel)
  • Knowledge of modularization
  •  Skilled in creating and iterating layouts by integrating written and/or verbal descriptions of basic civil/structural, mechanical/process, and electrical system requirements
  • Advanced understanding of plant layout software
  • Experience using 3D CAD software, preferably PTC Creo
  • Understanding of occupational health and safety (OHS) requirements for safety and access for equipment layout
  • Strong problem identification and problem resolution skills
  • Flexibility to adjust to shifting priorities and deadlines
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced, multi-disciplinary team environment
  • Exceptional interpersonal skills, with ability to communicate clearly and accurately, both written and verbally
  • Skilled at developing and maintaining strong relationships across all levels of the organization and with external customers and vendors

Assets

  • Master’s degree in architecture from a university program approved by the Canadian Architectural Certification Board
  • Knowledge and/or experience in Generation IV reactors (Gen IV)
  • Knowledge of the general operation of a nuclear power plant and aspects relating to flooding, fire, radiological protection, and human factors
  • Experience with high temperature system/equipment layout design
