Canadian Government Releases Roadmap Report on Small Modular Reactors

OAKVILLE, ON – December 11, 2018 – In November, Minister Sohi, the Canadian Minister of Natural Resources announced the conclusions of the Government’s “SMR Roadmap”, a 10-month nationwide study of Small Modular Reactor (SMR) technology, and unveiled at the Generation IV and Small Reactor (G4SR) conference in Ottawa.  The Canadian government now joins the United States and the United Kingdom to state the importance of Generation IV SMRs in a national energy system.

“The SMR Roadmap report concludes a year of industrial policy pronouncements in support of nuclear innovation by the governments of Canada, the United States and the United Kingdom,” said Simon Irish, CEO of Terrestrial Energy. “The policy message from these three advanced industrial economies is clear: nuclear innovation and Generation IV SMRs contribute to industrial competitiveness and economic growth, energy security, and toward achieving ambitious clean energy targets. They are in the national interest, and are now a matter of policy.”

This message is expressed clearly in the United Kingdom’s recent “Nuclear Sector Deal” policy announcement, and in the United States’ recent enactment of the Nuclear Energy Innovation Capabilities Act, and the DOE Research and Innovation Act.

The SMR Roadmap report concludes that Generation IV SMR development is a response to market forces for “smaller, simpler and cheaper” nuclear energy, and the large global market for this technology will be “driven not just by climate change and clean energy policies, but also by the imperatives of energy security and access.”

“The SMR Roadmap lays the groundwork for Canada to lead in the development of innovative low-carbon nuclear technologies of the future,” said Canadian Nuclear Association President and CEO, Dr. John Barrett. “SMRs are a powerful way to provide much-needed reliable sources of clean energy to utilities, and electricity grid operators, and to the natural resources sector generally, while reducing greenhouse gas emissions and adverse environmental impacts from energy production.”

The SMR Roadmap’s key findings support Company’s business plans:

  • Canada’s domestic market potential for SMRs is significant;
  • Canada has the capabilities to successfully develop and deploy SMRs;
  • SMRs are capable of competing with other low-cost forms of electricity generation;
  • Canada’s enabling regulatory framework for SMRs is capable of supporting SMR licensing; and,
  • Canada’s existing nuclear waste management framework is sound and sufficiently flexible to accommodate new fuel types for SMRs.

About Terrestrial Energy
Terrestrial Energy is a developer of Generation IV advanced nuclear power plants that use its proprietary Integral Molten Salt Reactor (IMSR®) technology. IMSR® technology represents true innovation in cost reduction, versatility and functionality of nuclear power plants. IMSR® power plants will provide zero-carbon, reliable, dispatchable, cost-competitive electric power and high grade industrial heat for use in many industrial applications, such as chemical synthesis and desalination, and in so doing extend the application of nuclear energy far beyond electric power markets. They have the potential to make important contributions to industrial competitiveness, energy security, and economic growth. Their deployment will support rapid global decarbonization of the primary energy system by displacing fossil fuel combustion across a broad spectrum. Using an innovative design, and proven and demonstrated molten salt reactor technology, Terrestrial Energy is engaged with regulators and industrial partners to complete IMSR® engineering and to commission first IMSR® power plants in the late 2020s.
