Terrestrial Energy said it will submit a design for a molten salt reactor to the Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission for a pre-licensing review.
The Oakville, Ontario-based company’s molten salt design is the first to be submitted to a regulatory authority in North America. Canada’s nuclear regulator, known as the CNSC, will review the reactor’s design and offer feedback before Terrestrial starts its licensing process. The company said in a Feb. 25 statement that the submission is the first step toward an eventual license application to build its first commercial demonstration power plant.
